This is not always easy, considering every airline has their own restrictions when it comes to both size, dimensions and weight of your carry-on. The restrictions can also vary depending on if it’s a domestic or international flight.
Find the right carry-on size
With that being said, many major airlines follow the same standard. A common size that you will find around the world is 22 x 14 x 9 inches, or 56 x 36 x 23 centimeters. For example this is the standard for most airlines in the US, together with some major operators in Asia and Europe.

When it comes to the weight of your carry-on, this also varies quite a bit between the different airlines. Make sure to check the rules for your chosen airlines to avoid having to pay extra or unpack at check-in.
Carry-on size – low cost airlines
Note that the low cost operators normally have other rules when it comes to carry-on luggage. Where major airlines allow you to bring a regular size carry-on onboard for free, this is usually connected with a fee on the low cost airlines. If you don’t want to pay extra for your carry-on, it usually needs to fit the size limit of 16 x 10 x 8 inches (40 x 25 x 20 centimeters) and fit under the seat in front of you.
